Fixie Horsey by Eungi Kim

Horse head on a broomstick no-more, here's a wonderfully innovative bicycle design by Eungi Kim that was shortlisted in Design Boom's Seoul Cycle Design Competition 2010.

Designer's Own Words:'Horsey' is an attachable bicycle ornament/accessory which makes one's bicycle look horsey! The 'horsey' package includes wooden ornaments (horsey shape body), metal parts, and screws. The manual is very simple so that anyone can easily arrange it according to one’s needs. Through this 'horsey' project, I wanted to give a special look to bicycles so that people would care about cycling not only as transportation but also as a lovely pet.

Now if only the silhouette were a neon light...

Lara Stone for Interview Magazine - Sept 2010

Lara Stone is the Brigitte Bardot fantasy Barbarella of this century, no question. I love this shoot because despite her incredible body, there's a strange other-worldly kinda plasticine/marble feeling to her. Some get this girl to a French art film director, quick!

Mockery Is The Sincerest Form of Flattery

VICIOUS! A friend randomly sent me this video called "Being a Dickhead's Cool" by The Grand Spectacular, one of many hipster-hating anthems. But turns out they used one of my Collection 03 photos in the video! I didn't think I was much of a hipster, having my car, own apartment, steady income and college degree but it's good to know I can still make the cut--I guess that makes me a dickhead by London standards? There's also a line that goes "I'm a blogger but I have a jewelry line."

Shit.

Original photo by/of the increasingly talented Michael Flores

It's actually a pretty catchy song and was featured on BoingBoing--the ultimate breeding ground for viral videos--and got 1.7MM+ hits within 6 daysReally an excellent example of meta hipster irony on the part of The Grand Spectacular because com'on, would a non-hipster really make something like this?

Well, I'm certainly not denying anything and I rather enjoy hipster bashing, so I guess I'll see you guys in litigation!

Marc Jacobs Opens Book Store: Bookmarc

Marc Jacobs really can't go wrong when it comes to branching out. His latest project is the freshly opened Marc Jacobs bookstore in NYC's, cleverly named Bookmarc, that replaces Biography Book Shop in the West Village. Taking the reasonably priced trinkets out of the Marc by Marc Jacob's store, Bookmarc is filled with postcards, notebooks, writing implements, small leather goods and high fashion school supplies emblazoned with the Marc Jacobs logo.

Maybe I'm extrapolating too far, but Marc Jacobs seems like a modern-day Andy Warhol, utilizing the idea of commodifying fashion the way Warhol made commodity into art with a tongue-in-cheek, yet actual approach. Japanese artist Takashi Murakami played with the idea of art as commodity and visa versa at his MOCA exhibit from a few years ago. He installed a Louis Vuitton store into the museum, and had the same keychains and toys that were selling in the gift shop put behind glass like priceless art. Marc Jacobs being the head designer for Louis Vuitton, he's clearly all about putting this idea into practice.

Murakami toy installation at MOCA, 2008

Somehow, putting Marc Jacobs' name on virtually anything doesn't come across as cheesy. I remember my advertising teacher saying Gucci was known in the 80's as this "tacky brand that sold keychains at the airport." If Marc did that, every traveller would have to have one. I personally would love to have my pen say "Marc Jacobs" since, well, it makes it look pricey. And a notebook with book titles warped with sexual innuendoes doesn't hurt either.

LOVE / LUST: Hermes-Inspired

LOVE:

Jeffrey Campbell Meeker Wedge Boot - $154.95 at Solestruck.com

Just when you've purchased one pair of Jeffrey Campbells, there's always a new one wanting to follow you home. I love the subtle winged quality of the wedge, like the winged shoes of the Greek god Hermes (or the Redbull guy if you will).

LUST:

Hermès Kelly Watch - $1,875.00 at Hermes.com

A direct reference to Hermes--obvi--but it's amazing what a little accent can change. Is it just me, or is this watch kinda kinky?

Tavi Styles Christine Staub for Blackbook

Fashion blogger phenom Tavi Gevinson of the much-lauded Style Rookie put her discerning eye towards styling her first editorial shoot for BlackBook Magazine's August 2010 issue--at just 13. The styling is befitting for Tavi, bringing her
characteristic vintage-come-grandma-come-clashing child craft aesthetic to the look and feel of this shoot.

Having just seen the two Real Housewives of New Jersey Reunion shows, I'm fascinated with 16 year-old model Christine Staub, daughter of the show's villain Danielle Staub. Christine was chosen for Tavi's BlackBook shoot after Chloe Sevigny dropped out. With a mother who is razzed all over the media for being a pathological liar and psychopath, one can't help but feel bad for Christine, who was lucky enough to inherit some pretty good genes (and hopefully none of the bad ones).  The title, "Nobody's Daughter" certainly fits the cause as Christine outshines her mother with an interrupted innocence reminiscent of a young Muriel Hemingway.

From Coq to Creme - The Maudlin Days of Matthew Barney

Often enough, the media reveals, and revels in, the dark pasts of celebrities, politicians and other public figures. Drug abuse, prostitutes, mugshots, illegitimate children and concealed homosexuality-ridden pasts of the girl/boy-next-door (and frequently conservative) types are a favored fodder to countless gossip outlets. But in the case of shocking visual artist Matthew Barney, his past is only a similar situation in that it was a complete 180-degree turn from his opulently bizarre image today.

Trailer for Barney's Cremaster Cycle, the name taken from the cremaster muscle in the testicles. Barney crawls through vaseline and animal fat, crashes cars in the Chrysler Building lobby, has dancing, cross-dressing, decomposed bodies and double-amputee models--all very un-J. Crew.

As revealed to me by DIS Magazine, before Barney became an art world superstar with his ground-breaking, yet long-winded Cremaster Cycle art films, he supported himself through college at Yale by modeling. Not nude / fetish / pornographic modeling like we've seen with other celebrities and pageant winners, (and would be apropos for the artist) but a shameful portfolio of all-American goodness consisting of J. Crew, Macy's, The Men's Store and Le Coq Sportif:

I wonder what his current girlfriend and baby mama Bjork would have to say about his gut-wrenchingly wholesome modeling days? But then again, it's kind of a "no wonder" he turned out to be an artist covered in blood and Alexander McQueen after all that forced smiling.

Ksubi Eyewear Spring 2011

I'm a glasses wearer. Although I'm at an appropriate age to get laser eye surgery and save myself a boatload of money and hassle for the rest of my life, I'm hesitant because I love glasses so much. I once had a crush on a guy I saw wear glasses at first, then never again. Now he looks like the type to take hostages.

Rebellious Austrian streetwear label Ksubi has grabbed headlines with their hard-partying antics like pushing nude models off the side of a boat fashion show and releasing live rats on the catwalk. Now, I can wax poetic about their Spring 2011 eyewear campaign being influenced by American Gothic and René Magritte, but I love this shoot because it looks like they used whatever they could find in Uncle Chuck's storage shed down at the docks--including the two guys huffing shoe polish inside.
