Ryan Granich, aka mu0p, aka Thrall City, aka once known as Flamingo, aka 1/2 of dj crew Goddollars, aka a buddy of mine is a man who can harness light like no other. Resident lighting and prop designer for one of Los Angeles' premiere monthly parties,
A Club Called Rhonda, you've seen his work in geometric ceiling hangings and walls of synchronized old computer screens in the legendary Tik Tok parties from a few years ago (years before Ke$ha took the name!), and in
New High (M)art "Cosmic Collision" pop-up shop installation that KidViskous participated in:
Amazing what he could do with just sheets of plastic and rip-ties!
Most recently Ryan has designed a full-scale lighting installation at the MOCA Geffen Contemporary location for the Lucky Dragon band/art collective interactive performance for MOCA's ongoing
Engagement Party series. The idea of these events is to encourage party-goers to participate in the performances, having instruments lying around, touch sensitive lighting and other such interactive materials and situations. Ryan's moving and color-changing light installations look like something you'd hire an entire lighting company to handle, but this was a one man job. Unbelievable (especially considering he's not even 25 yet)! If you gave the guy $10,000, he could make perfect replicas of both fully functional
Daft Punk helmets from scratch and still have change for his own mask.
