Repurpose Old Sweaters by This Guy's Mom: Reknit

A fun idea that promotes sustainable wearables, you can have an old knit sweater unravelled then re-knitted into something else for $30 by a real live mom.  For February, Reknit was doing sweaters-->gloves (sold out, only took the first 30 orders.  The guy--graphic designer Haik Avanian--has only one mom after all) and you can vote for March's item: iPod case, socks, hat or sweatbands.

Reminiscent of the Swiss Netgranny sock craze from a few years ago, where you can buy hand-knitted socks by grandmothers in Switzerland judging by their photos, Reknit gives the idea of grandmotherly gift-giving a greener step up.

Let's just hope Mama Avanian isn't being put to work too hard!

Must See: Uniqlo's Calendar

Showing sped up footage from various outdoor cameras around Shibuya Japan, Japanese clothing line Uniqlo's calendar is a fresh, fun, and addictive take on online voyeurism.  From shopping centers and snowy parking lots to monkey sanctuaries, the calendar rotates through seemingly endless lineup of different cameras around the city accompanied by a fractured soundtrack of Japanese electro blip-pop.  This online calendar is more art installation than timekeeper.  I could watch this much longer than I used to watch HamsterDance.com as a kid (which is a LONG time).

There is a screensaver you can download as well that streams the calendar, or you can choose from the various kitchy 60s-esque promotional "Uniqlock" clips of cute Japanese dancers wearing Uniqlo gallivanting around Paris and other locales.  But be sure to turn down/off the sound on the screensavers so you won't jump every time it turns on.

Ryan Granich: Man-O-Light

Ryan Granich, aka mu0p, aka Thrall City, aka once known as Flamingo, aka 1/2 of dj crew Goddollars, aka a buddy of mine is a man who can harness light like no other.  Resident lighting and prop designer for one of Los Angeles' premiere monthly parties, A Club Called Rhonda, you've seen his work in geometric ceiling hangings and walls of synchronized old computer screens in the legendary Tik Tok parties from a few years ago (years before Ke$ha took the name!), and in New High (M)art "Cosmic Collision" pop-up shop installation that KidViskous participated in:

Amazing what he could do with just sheets of plastic and rip-ties!

Most recently Ryan has designed a full-scale lighting installation at the MOCA Geffen Contemporary location for the Lucky Dragon band/art collective interactive performance for MOCA's ongoing Engagement Party series.  The idea of these events is to encourage party-goers to participate in the performances, having instruments lying around, touch sensitive lighting and other such interactive materials and situations.  Ryan's moving and color-changing light installations look like something you'd hire an entire lighting company to handle, but this was a one man job.  Unbelievable (especially considering he's not even 25 yet)!  If you gave the guy $10,000, he could make perfect replicas of both fully functional Daft Punk helmets from scratch and still have change for his own mask.

Lucky Dragons @ MOCA:

To give you a better idea of how extraordinary Ryan's work is, follow this link to a video touring the MOCA space:  Ryan Granich Installation MOCA (this may not work as it is on his facebook and may be restricted).

Die Antwoord: Enter The Ninja

South African eurotrash hip hop group Die Antwoord can only conjure up abbreviations like WTF and LOL, but is strangely addicting, and I'm kind of digging the awful Keith Haring rip off graphics. And is it just me, or does the girl look like she should be in a Chris Cunningham video?

P.S. Yes, that is a Dance Dance Revolution sample they're using.

Welcome: Sherry Truitt Vintage Map Necklace

Handmade out of vintage maps, this resin and oxidized silver necklace can come in any city you chose by Sherry Truitt.  This gift couldn't have come at a more appropriate time as I am leaving for Joshua Tree tomorrow for a month!  I will miss home, but now have a literal interpretation of the LA bubble around my neck.

Keep reading the Tiffanemic blog to witness my gradual descent into desert madness.
